Bittersweet by Sarah Ockler

I must say something.

I love Sarah Ockler.

I read Twenty Boy Summer last year and fell in love with her writing.

Since I believe the sun shines out of Twenty Boy Summers ass I wasn't sure I would like this book.

Well folks i'm happy to say that this book did not let me down AT ALL.

Bittersweet is told from Hudsons point of view and let me just say I loved her.

Hudson used to skate competitivly but after figuring out that her parents marriage was over she blows her final program.

A few years later she's given up ice skating and is now the Cupcake Queen at her mothers diner.

Even though she quit competing doesn't mean she quit skating all together. One day she's out skating and literally runs into a boy from school. A very cute boy. A hockey player kind of boy.

The two have instant feelings for each other but the book isn't all about that.

The book follows Hudson as she continues baking, begins working for her mother, and starts helping out the hockey team.

What? Yes you read correctly. She helps the hockey team. She teaches them many different things about the ice and in doing so turns them into a winning team.

I loved the relationships in this book. I thought Josh (cute hockey player boy) was super likeable. I adored the rest of the hockey team. Hudsons best friend Dani was amazing. Her little brother was awesome.
Seriously amazing characters in this book.

I don't care if you've read any other books by Sarah Ockler you must pick up this book now! She's awesome. READ IT! : )

When It Happens by Susane Colasanti

I adored this book!

I adored it so much that I READ IT IN ONE FREAKING SITTING!

I couldn't put it down. It was like watching a really good movie. One that's so good that you don't even want to stop for snacks.

No seriously, it's that good!
The story follows Sara and Tobey and their seriously adorable relationship.
If you've read any of my other reviews then you know that I LOVE when an author writes from the girls and guys pov. It's so much fun getting to know both characters and seeing what goes on in both their heads.
I really liked Sara. She was super smart and fun. Really really likeable. I think we should be bff's.
And as far as Tobey....AHHH he sounds so cute! I loved him.
In the begining of the book Sara is dating another dude. Aka huge loser. Tobey decides that he's going to get her to like him because he thinks she's cooler than sliced bread.
So it's his mission throughout the book to get Sara to like him the way he likes her.
It's so cute and wonderful. Full of laughs and love. Ahh.. I just loved it.
Go read it!!!!

Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire

I. Loved. This. Book.

I want to marry Travis. No actually i'm okay with not marrying him...that's how much I love Abby.

If you've read Beautiful Disaster then you know what this book is about.

It's Beautiful Disaster all over again only told from Travis's point of view.

Might I say brilliant Jamie McGuire. Freaking brilliant!

I loved Beautiful Disaster because I think that Travis and Abby are both amazing.

Abby is smart and beautiful. Travis is smokin hot and can be super hilarious.

I loved Walking Disaster because I FINALLY GOT TO SEE INSIDE TRAVIS'S HEAD!

If you liked the first book then definatly check this one out. It's just plain full of awesome.

p.s. Thanks for the epilogue Jamie McGuire it made me feel all happy inside!

J.J. Howard Interview

What's that? Are you wondering if you read the title of this post right?

Well let me assure you that yes, yes you did.

I interviewed J.J. Howard!
I recently reviewed That Time I Joined the Circus and I freaking loved it! It's one of the best books i've read so far this year.
She's an excellent author and a super amazing person!

Alright alright. Enough fan girling. On to the interview....

1. Why did you want to be a writer?

Writing (and grammar) are on the short list of things that came really easily to me. I'm also pretty good at arts and crafts, and I make a mean waffle. A lot of supposedly easy skills were not all that easy for me. Example: driving. My mom tried to teach me. Fail. My dad tried. Epic fail. Finally a pro driving teacher was required. I have a perfect record and all now, but when I was sixteen the whole process seemed really challenging.
So I wanted to be a writer for a long time, and I figured I'd teach English "for a while" to pay the bills. I accidentally liked teaching too much, and I worked on that first, then got back into writing!

2. What made you want to write about the circus?

I wanted to do a contemporary, because I'd written some short stories for a class I was taking in grad school, and I felt really comfortable with my contemporary voice...but I still wanted something just a little fantasy-adjacent for the setting. There are not that many real-life places that we still use the word "magic" to describe--outside Disneyworld. So circus seemed the perfect choice.

3. Did anyone you know inspire your characters?

My MC is really too much like me...I realized after the book came out! She's much, much cooler than me, though. I've never joined a circus, for one, and when I was seventeen I was just starting to listen to non-radio songs. In fact, I think the horribleness of popular music circa 1990 is what led me to seek out more obscure music!

4. Which boy was your favorite Jamie, Eli or Nick?

Hmmm...this is an interesting question. I was at the NYC Teen Author Festival last week, and on one of the panels the moderator asked the best question--I really wished I was on that panel!--she asked what type of love story each author liked best. You know, love/hate, love at first sight...a lot of the authors went for the Andie/Duckie best friendship that turns into more (or could turn into more, in the case of the ending of Pretty In Pink.) All I will say on this subject is that my favorite variety of romantic story is the reformed rake--a guy who seems like he doesn't really care...until he meets that one girl. The rational side of my brain knows that this story is total rubbish. But I fall for it almost every time.

5. Music is a huge part of "That Time I Joined The Circus" If you could be in any band which one would it be?

I just saw the Dropkick Murphys in concert the other week, and their opening band--I can't even remember the name--was huge and they all played about nine instruments. And they seemed like they were having more fun than anyone has ever had in life. So I'll say that band, and in that fantasy, I'm also able to play many musical instruments. I can play the guitar...just not very well.

6. Lexi and you have music in common. Are there any other similiarites?

I already told on myself there! A love of reading: especially Jane Austen and Regency romances. The tendency to be self-deprecating. Also sarcastic-you know-very rarely.

7. Are there any songs that inspire your writing?

I am completely inspired by music! When I was writing TTIJTC, I was pretty obsessed with Broken Bells. At the moment, I'm all about Morning Parade. In a year or so I hope to be talking about how important their eponymous album was in inspiring my current work in progress :)

8. What type of book do you love reading the most?

I read a lot of different kinds of books. I love books about pop culture--I've read all the (Buffy) (Doctor Who) ___ and Philosophy books for the shows I love. I like nonfiction on media and society--like Neil Postman and Benjamin Barber. I love YA--some of my current faves are John Green and Veronica Roth. I also still love those darn Regency romances.

9. If you could spend the day with any author, living or dead, who would you choose and why?

I always say Jane Austen, because her books had such an impact on my life. I think she was a great contemporary writer: through her words and observations, that time period is still alive, in a way. What a great thing to be able to do.

10. If you could pick any band to write a song about your book, who would you choose?

Oh my goodness, that would be amazing! Any band writing a song about it would make my life. Are the Replacements still together? If not Paul Westerberg would do just fine. : )

11. Why is music so important in this book?

I think because it's Lexi's tie to her dad, and in a way the book is about how Lexi has to learn to navigate the world without him--figure out who she is on her own.

12. Which character do you most relate to?

Lexi...but I also really relate to Liska, actually. She feels so much responsibility to her family, and it's hard for her to step away from what they want, need and expect, and figure out what she actually wants to do.

13. Would you ever consider writing a sequel/companion?

A couple of people have asked this, and to them I say, I love you! I would totally live in this world again--sequel or spin-off. I think Liska is in for some adventures for sure. ; )

14. If you could get tickets/backstage passes to any concert who would you want to see?

Bon Iver, Imagine Dragons, Morning Parade, Broken Bells...I'd also be fine with traveling back in time to see The Cure, The Smiths, The Cult--any of those great The-bands. Speaking of, The The would also be fine. ; )

15. If your book had a theme song what would it be?

I think The Lumineer's "Ho Hey" would be a great song for Lexi and Eli. But then again, "Speechless" by Morning Parade would work well for Lexi and Nick. ; )

1. How long have you been making YouTube videos?

I have been making YouTube videos since the 26th of December. It is a very special day for me. It feels like I suddenly had a burst of confidence to film and upload a video. My first video was a book haul.

2. What made you want to make book related videos?

I have always read books but in November I started to crave a good book. I was being recomended books by a lot of people and one book series that stood out was 'Witch and Wizard' by James Patterson. So I went onto YouTube and typed in 'Witch and Wizard by James Patterson Reviews'. Low and behold lots of results came up. I was amazed by the number of people talking about books. One video led to another and then to another and I stared buying lots and lots of books. This resulted in me reading a lot more and I wanted to start sharing my thoughts on books and reading. Then I got the idea suddenly on the 26th of December to make my Christmas book haul. That's how I entered into this wondeful community.

3. Who are some of your favorite authors?

I love books about witches and super powers so I will now list you a couple of my favourite authors.
The first one is L.J. Smith and she wrote 'The Secret Circle' series which is about witches and magic. Another one of my favourite authors is Gabriella Lepore who is known for writing the book 'Witches of Glass Castle' Which is amazing. I also love G.P. Ching as an author. He has written 'The Soul Keeper Series' this series is not as well known but it's a wonderful story. It's all about Angels and Magic.

4. If you could go to lunch with any author, who would you choose?

This question is awesome. I would love to go to lunch with Homer. Homer wrote a lot of ancient Greek mythology books. I would talk to him about ancient Greece and all the stories. That would result in the lunch being extremely long as I would ask so many questions...and hug him...

5. Who is your favorite singer/band?

This is a good one. I do not really have a favourite. If I hear a song that fits my mood at the time then I will listen to that song on repeat and no others. I primarily listen to songs that YouTube artists have covered. I love the Pentatonix on YouTube they are so dynamic.

6. Do you ever listen to music while reading? If so what kind?

I do not listen to music. I open my window and listen to the sounds outside. I do this because it calms me down and keeps me focused.

7. What is your favorite book to movie adaptation?

THE HOST. I just came back from watching it and it was amazing. I do not normally like the adaptations as I feel like they miss out lots of the story. But with The Host it kept the story really similar to the book and I loved it...I cried...like a baby...

8. Have you ever met any authors? Who would you like to meet?

I have not met any authors but I would love to meet Gabriella Lepore. She's a lovely person and a brilliant writer. I have done an interview with her on my channel and she was so kind and collected. I really enjoy what she has to say. I would love her to write me a character in one of her books. It would be my dream.

9. What is your favorite book series?

My favourite book series is The Caster Chronicles. This is because it has magic and love in it. The story really makes me crave to live the same life. It's amazing. So unique and I really do feel as if the environment in the book comes to life. It's beautiful.

10. Would you ever want to write a book? If so what genre?

I would like to one day. It would be about Witches. I don't want to give to much away as I want to keep it as secret as I can until I complete it. But yes Witches and magic and NO LOVE.

11. Who are some of your favorite booktubers?

I really love LittleBookOwl. She's one of my very good friends and she makes amazing content in her videos, she is a stunning person. I also love SuddenlyLorna she's a lovely person and really interesting to listen to when she reviews books. I ALSO LOVE Geraldine from Starian72 she is lovely and has amazing video and she buys so so so many books so it makes me feel less like I have a problem.

12. You're going on a trip. Which 5 books would you bring with you?

The four books in the 'Beautiful Creatures series' and 'The Witches of Glass Castle'. Such amazing reads.

13. What's the best part of making YouTube videos?

I love speaking to all the other viewers. I love reading what they have to say and I love communicating with them. Everyone is so nice and I really think that they have all given me amazing amounts of support and love. So grateful.

1. Have you always wanted to be a writer? How long have you been writing for?

Always always. I've been writing since I can remember. First with pencil and paper. Then I got my pen license at school and there was no holding me back. The house was filled with loose-leaf paper and notebooks. That mess stopped when I started typing, and now it's my hard drive full of documents, not my bedroom.

2. If you could do anything other than write, what would you want to do?

I also work as a freelance editor, editing other authors books as well as working for copy writers and businesses. I love working with words and helping authors get their stories to read as amazingly as it sounded in the author's head.

3. What kind of books do you like to read?

I'm a YA girl all the way. I like contemporary romances, dytopians, thrillers, sci fi, horror, comedies, paranormal... When i'm writing contemporary I tend to be READING dystopians and thrillers etc.

4. Are there any authors that you idolise?

John Marsden was my hero as a child, and he always will be. I wanted to write amazing books like him. He really got me started and i'm so grateful. These days, as I love writing comedy, I totally idolise Louise Rennison and Brent Crawford. I freaking love their books. LOVE.

5. In "The Kiss Off" Ty and his band go on tour. If you were in a band who would you want to tour with?

I would love to tour with McFly. They just always seem to be having so much fun, and though they take their work seriously, they have a lot of fun with it and keep expanding and trying something new. I respect that. :)

6. Part of Ty's appeal is that he's in a band. Who is your celebrity crush?

Extra came on TV just now and my celebrity crush is totally Andrew Garfield.
(And) like all Walking Dead fans, Daryl Dixon aka Norman Reedus. From the first couple of episodes I did NOT expect it, but there it is.

7. How did you come up with Poppys character?

I think the events of the story are really what shaped her, or me. I wanted to write about this really opinionated character, who felt jilted and wasn't taking it lying down. She's much more of a drama queen than I am, so she's pretty fun to write.

8. Is Ty based on anyone you know?

Sadly, no.

9. Which character did you most enjoy writing about?

I liked writing the boys from Academy of Lies. I'm not a big fan of the swoon worthy guy depicted in so many novels, who is obsessed with a girl and his whole world revolves around her. I'm not a fan of guys in books who think like women do. My guys hit each other all the time and stacks on, and have races in shopping trolleys because it's fun. They're just guys, and they're fun to write.

10. What made you want to write a sequeal to "The Kiss Off"?

I like the characters, and I have more stories to write about them, but they have to be the RIGHT stories. I want to write spin offs for Ty, Mads and Vanya as well at some point.

11. As of right now are you ending with "The Kiss Off 2" or do you plan on writing a series?

There will be a third in the series, set some place exotic. It all depends on if I get some grants I applied for as to where it'll be set! The third will be the last official Kiss Off book.

12. "The Kiss Off" is all about music. What are some of your favorite bands/singers?

My favourites at the moment are McFly, All Time Low, Marc Broussard, and I love that song Thank You by MKTO.

13. Do you listen to music while writing?

Nooooo. It's distracting! I listen to the music instead of writing.

14. When is the release or "The Kiss Off 2"

GOOD QUESTION. I have some stuff in the works that I can't really talk about just yet that may affect the release date. I was aiming for July, but it's all a bit up in the air right now, unfortunatly. But with a good reason, I promise!

15. If "The Kiss Off" had a theme song what would it be?

What the Hell by Avril Lavigne.
